De La Montaña - “Money Hungry Astronauts”
De La Montaña is the brainchild of Madison Velding-VanDam, an Ann Arbor, MI-native whose move to Santiago, Chile inspired his debut album, Postmodern Whirled. It’s a textured collection of songs, fusing the analog and digital with an almost math-like rhythmic layout. Madison’s lyrics are poignant but subtle, never preachy, often reconciling the contradictions inherent in everyday travels.
“Money Hungry Astronauts” is a standout track, one that takes hold when the throbbing bassline hits your chest (you’ve gotta listen with good headphones or speakers) underneath skittish percussion panning left and right and back again. The layers of guitars, keys, and vocals build and build and you can’t help but to turn up the volume and while you’re involuntarily bouncing around and nodding your head, Madison sings “Who grows up to think ‘I want to be on Wall Street?’ We want to be astronauts,” and you find yourself in total agreement.
De La Montaña is finishing up a series of Midwestern shows before tour dates in Portugal and Spain next month. Postmodern Whirled is available now and you should probably (definitely) follow them on Tumblr as well.
AWOLNATION - Sail
I know, I know. I’m posting another Billboard song. This is a habit I have to stop and look, I can’t tell you exactly why I love Sail, I just do.
While I’m not as a big fan of AWOLNATION’s other stuff: this song is perfection. It balances a sweetness in harmony and clapping with the harsh hoarseness of leader singer, Aaron Bruno’s voice. The lyrics are simple but evocative. And then there’s this hint of synth that I love. Sail has a grittiness a lot of rock music is missing these days. Dammit, there’s even a piano interlude!
And it all ties together perfectly because you literally feel rocked; you’re at the edge of a cliff, you’re in the pouring rain, you’re watching waves crash down.
